  About the Artwork

This poster was created by Heckel announcing an exhibition of the work of Die Briicke, a group formed in 1905 by four artists who had studied architecture together in Dresden: Heckel, Fritz Bleyl, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Later, they were joined by Emil Nolde and Otto Mueller. They exhibited together frequently between 1906 and 1911. This poster is prized not only as a rare document of a dynamic period in early art of the 1900s, but it demonstrates the expressive and bold visual power inherent in the woodcut medium where the image is carved into a block of wood which is inked then printed on paper.

  Accession Number

This unique number is assigned to an individual artwork as part of the cataloguing process at the time of entry into the permanent collection.
Most frequently, accession numbers begin with the year in which the artwork entered the museum’s holdings.
For example, 2008.3 refers to the year of acquisition and notes that it was the 3rd of that year. The DIA has a few additional systems—no longer assigned—that identify specific donors or museum patronage groups.
